How to Turn on and Use Active Worksite as a User

Wondering how to turn on and begin using Active Worksite™ as a user? Let's talk about the steps for turning it on in the OnStation App and how it works.

Our Active Worksite product enables OnStation to report your location in real time in order to highlight active work zones and the workers within those boundaries. This helps improve team coordination and safety by giving visible indicators of when a job site is actively being worked on and how many people are currently working in that construction zone.

Step 1: Open OnStation

  • Launch the OnStation app on your mobile device.
  • Select the project you'd like to mark as an active worksite from your "My project" list.

Note: If you recently accessed the project you wish to enable active worksite on, the app will automatically open that project and you will not have to select it from your "My project" list.

Step 2: Go to the Station Finder

  • Tap the Station finder- When first accessing a project, the station finder will say "stationing unavailable" until you manually jump to an alignment or hover over the cross hair in any section of your project alignments.
  •  This opens the live stationing view that displays stationing information, alignment names and Active Worksite status.

Step 3: Enable Active Worksite

  • First turn on your GPS location by tapping the arrowhead in the upper right portion of your map. (Once turned on, the arrowhead will go from a green outline to solid green)

  • Locate the Active Worksite icon in the bottom left corner that looks like a shield, outlined in green.

  • Toggle Active Worksite "ON" by tapping on that shield

  • If you are offsite the app will inform you that you are "not onsite and it will create an Active Worksite based on your current location"

You’ll now start broadcasting your location for the project.

How it Works Behind the Scenes:

Once Active Worksite is ON, OnStation reports your location to the system every 30 seconds.
As long as you're within 50 meters of the location you initially enabled Active Worksite, a green dot will appear at your location on the map, showing others you're present at the worksite. From the point you turn on Active Worksite, the map updates almost instantly. Then iCone serves as the liaison to report location updates in 5 minutes increments to our GPS navigation partners such as Waze.

Auto Shutoff: What Happens if You Leave?

If you move more than 50 meters away from your starting point, for more than 30 minutes, your green dot will disappear within seconds of that 30-minute timer expiring. You will then receive a notification letting you know that your location is no longer being tracked. It's important to note that this will only stop tracking YOUR location. If any of your other teammates who enabled Active Worksite are still within 50 meters of their starting location. Their green dots will remain on the project map and continually be reported to iCone & Waze unless they do the same and stray away from their starting point more than 50 meters, and for more than 30 minutes.

Why does the app stop tracking my location if I’m away from my worksite for more than 30 Minutes? The app will automatically turn off Active Worksite to:

  • Save your phone’s battery
  • Avoid sending unnecessary location data
  • Protect your privacy

Why Does Active Worksite Not Shut Off Immediately When You Walk Away?

First off to ensure that we provide the most accurate location details to oncoming traffic to keep you guys as safe as possible while onsite. Also, GPS can be inaccurate or drop off temporarily (ex: walking behind a truck or losing signal). To avoid annoying you with constant reactivation prompts or sudden loss of tracking, the app waits a full 30 minutes of inactivity before disabling Active Worksite.

Best Practices:
Turn Active Worksite on when you arrive at a site to help others know where work is
happening. Manually turn it off when you leave for the day, go to lunch, or
are no longer working. Don’t worry about it if you forget—OnStation has your back
with auto shutoff after 30 minutes of inactivity.
